Provigil (modafinil) Instruction : Uses, Dosage, Side Effects

Modafinil 100 mg tablets are prescribed for the treatment of narcolepsy excessive sleepiness.

Indications for the drug use:

Provigil is developed to reduce excessive daytime sleepiness, due to narcolepsy, unpleasant medical condition. Provigil has no effect on cataplexy (sudden loss of muscle tone).

You shouldn’t take Provigil to reduce daytime sleepiness due to other conditions, such as lack of night sleep or breathing impairment during sleep (apnea).

Product information: Brand name – Provigil.

Each tablet contains 100 mg of active substance – Modafinil.

Other ingredients: lactose, corn starch, magnesium monosilicate, sodium croscarmellose, polyvidone, magnesium stearate and talc.

How does the drug work?

As in case with many other drugs, acting on the brain, the mechanism of Provigil action is also not fully known. Clinical studies have shown, that Provigil is able to cause insomnia in narcoleptic patients.

Drug precautions

Because of the possibility of overstimulation, Provigil can change your ability to deal with dangerous tasks.

Avoid this remedy, if you are worried or concerned with something.

You should not take Provigil if you are allergic to it or to one of its non-pharmaceutical ingredients (see “Product Information”).

How to take Provigil?

If you have moderate or heavy blood pressure, which can not be cured or properly monitored during your therapy, or if you suffer some other heart problems, try to make regular checks at your doctor while and after treatment course. Do not take Provigil, until you have discussed your blood pressure and heart problems with the doctor.

Your doctor’s prescription form should indicate the necessary dose and duration of treatment in your case. If this is not specified and you are not sure how to pick up the right dose, turn to the doctor or pharmacist.

Ordinarily, Provigil is taken by one or two tablets in the morning and during the day. Your doctor will try to select a dose to match the highest periods of sleepiness during the day. The second dose is usually taken in the afternoon or later, in order to prevent trouble sleeping at night.

All patients should be aware, that Provigil does not work right away. It may take about one hour before you will feel the effect. Do not take more than four (400 mg) tablets per day.

Do not take more pills, that you are prescribed. Missing the dose, you can take it as soon as you remember, but not in the evening. Late intake of medication can prevent falling asleep at your normal bedtime.

Side effects of Provigil

Headache, insomnia, nervousness, nausea, dry mouth and dizziness – the most common side effects, known for this medication. These side effects tend to disappear after several days or after reducing the dosage. By gradual movement to a maximum daily dose for a few days you can prevent these side effects.

Pregnancy and lactation Deciding to treat with this remedy, inform your physician, whether you are pregnant, plan to be pregnant or breastfeeding mom. There is limited information on the safety of Provigil in this group of patients. Therefore, the drug is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Interactions with other drugs

Before accepting Provigil, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all other medications, you are taking, including non-traditional medicine, herbal supplements, etc.

If you take oral contraceptives with Provigil, in case of bleeding, inform your doctor as quickly as possible.


Overdose can cause agitation, anxiety, increased heart rate and blood pressure.

In case of overdose, if you feel bad, immediately call emergency help or your physician.


Provigil should be stored at room temperature between 15 * and 30 * C. If the medication is over the shelf life (expiration date is available on prescription and package), throw your pills.

Keep these tablets in a safe place, where children and other family members can not reach them.
